Company Profile – Rheinmetall Defence

Rheinmetall Defence stands out prominently among the world's top suppliers of defence technology and security equipment.

Nioa Defence proudly represents Rheinmetall Defence for Infantry Products and Protections Systems within the Weapons and Munitions Division.  As Europe's leading supplier of technology for ground forces, Rheinmetall Defence offers a wide array of platforms and components available as stand-alone or networked system solutions.  Rheinmetall Defence stands for longstanding experience and pioneering innovation in the world of armoured vehicles, weapons and ammunition, air defence and electronics – a commitment to excellence which also extends to its naval and air force applications and public security products. The company's unsurpassed capacity to integrate individual components into system solutions is what makes Rheinmetall Defence such a powerful partner of the world's armed forces and security agencies.

The company's Weapon and Munitions division develops, manufactures and markets a comprehensive array of medium- and large-calibre products, ranging from the automatic cannon in the Eurofighter and medium-calibre naval guns for small surface combatants to the 120 mm smoothbore main armament of Germany's Leopard tank and the American Abrams. But the division's product portfolio also encompasses obscurant-based passive countermeasure systems for concealing not only military assets but also sensitive civilian installations such as nuclear power plants. Moreover, Rheinmetall Defence is also developing a number of highly advanced new capabilities, e.g. for disabling enemy electronics.

Protection Systems

Rapid advances in information technology have intensified the threat posed by intelligent weapon systems.  For years, the Protection Systems product division has specialized in the development and production of systems for protecting people, vehicles, aircraft, ships and critical assets.

Law Enforcement/Personnel Protection

Responding to changing threats, the Rheinmetall Defence offers system solutions for internal security and civil defence missions.  For instance in certain cases, a measured response may call for the use of non-lethal weapons. These can be used to temporarily disable a suspect, and are thus particularly useful in police operations like to free hostages.  Moreover these non-lethal weapons support law enforcement agencies and special operations forces coping with counter-revolution warfare, counter-terrorism, low intensity conflicts or peacekeeping.

The product ranges includes precision special-effects munitions, irritant cartridges, sound and flash grenades, smoke grenades as well as the corresponding training ammunition.

Protection Systems Sea

Rheinmetall Defence provides effective protection for naval vessels against advanced anti-ship missiles, which are equipped with UV, EO, IR, Laser or Radar seekers.  Illumination and signal products, for various applications, round out the portfolio.  Products include:

•    MASS Multiammunition Softkill System
•    Bullfighter 130mm Combined RF/IR Decoy
•    Giant 130mm IR Decoy
•    Hot Dog and Silver Dog 76mm Decoy

Protection Systems Air

Rheinmetall Defence high efficient spectrally balanced decoys, array flares and spot flares to protect carrier aircrafts, helicopters and jets against infrared-guided missiles.  Aircraft-like signature with fast rise time combined with high radiant intensity render Rheinmetall Defence's products eminently suitable for protection against modern SAM/AAM with infrared seeker heads, including those with two-colour ratio discrimination. The efficiency is seeker tested.  Products include:

•    Array Flare DM69A2 Spectrally Balanced IR Decoy
•    Birdie 218 Bi-spectral IR Decoy
•    Cirrus 118 Next Generation Array Flare

Protection Systems Land

Rapid protection against a wide spectrum of enemy sensors and sight is one of the most important requirements in modern military missions. Being stopped by a barrier, crossing a street in urban combat or being threatened by snipers are examples of situations where spontaneous invisibility can substantially increase the survivability.

Rheinmetall Defence provides smoke grenades to protect soldiers, small units and combat vehicles as well as multispectral and visual smoke projectiles for the employment of area smoke on the enemy area by artillery and mortars to protect larger units and military installations.  Products include:

•    Smoke Vehicle Protection System (SVPS)
•    Rosy-L Rapid Obscuring System
•    High Power Electronic Microwave System (HPEM)

Object/Facility Protection

Rheinmetall Defence provides effective protection for military and civil properties like forward operating bases, fighting positions and sensitive civil installations such as power plants.  In light of the global threat from terrorism, protecting critical civilian infrastructure–nuclear power plants, for example–has become a pressing issue. With the help of high-performance concealment systems, threatened installations can completely vanish in a cloud of artificial smoke in a matter of seconds. This makes it impossible to aim a plane directly into the target, significantly reducing the probability of a direct hit. The system works by firing red phosphorous flares into the air from ground launchers. This creates a multi-spectral cloud impenetrable to optical systems, infrared sensors and radar.

40mm Ammunition

Whether handheld or automatic, 40 mm grenade launchers constitute an important infantry weapon, providing valuable fire support at section or squad level. For 40 mm weapons of this type, Rheinmetall Defence supplies not only HE ammunition but also practice and special purpose cartridges.

Rheinmetall Defence supplies a wide array of 40 mm ammunition, including illumination and signal rounds, coloured smoke, screening smoke, impulse grenades, sound and flash and irritant gas grenades available in the calibres 40 mm x 46 (low velocity) and 40 mm x 53 (high velocity).

Rheinmetall's patented 40 mm propulsion system guarantees outstanding precision and performance which, unlike conventional propulsion systems, enables the cartridges to be used in a wider range of operational scenarios, including military operations on urbanized terrain (MOUT).

Hand Grenades

Rheinmetall Defence’s extensive range of hand grenades encompasses HE, smoke/obscurant and training versions. Moreover, tactical law enforcement units in numerous countries use the company’s sound, flash-stun, and tear gas grenades. Classic applications include the freeing of hostages during bank robberies and airline hijackings, putting down prison revolts, and counterterrorist operations. These products can also prove invaluable during peace-enforcement and peacekeeping missions as well as in border control scenarios.

Stun/Distraction Grenades

Law enforcement agencies use sound& flash stun grenades as a diversionary tactic to temporarily distract and disorient criminals. Classic applications include hostage rescue operations during bank robberies or aircraft hijackings; they are also useful in suppressing prison riots and in a counterterrorism role.

Furthermore, such grenades can be used by crisis reaction forces and frontier guards during peacekeeping and peace-enforcement missions.  The array of products here ranges from precision special purpose ammunition to sound & flash stun hand grenades and practice munitions.

Riot Control Products

Riot control products can be used from a safe standoff to incapacitate rioters or groups of persons when a demonstration turns violent. Tear gas, fired into a crowd and effectively placed, causes distraction that enables riot police to intervene and regain the upper hand.  Moreover, crisis reaction forces can use these products in a de-escalating mode to put down disturbances without endangering the civilian population.

In addition to irritant gas launchers and hand-thrown irritant gas grenades, Rheinmetall Defence supplies corresponding cartridges in various calibres and range categories; practice rounds are also available.

Pyrotechnic Signal/Smoke/Illumination

Today's military and police requirements during special operations and "conflicts other than war" necessitate special developed equipment.

Rheinmetall Defence offers a variety of non lethal devices – hand thrown or grenade launcher ammunition – with special adjusted effects.

The product range includes classic pyrotechnic products like illumination & signal devices (all calibres), coloured and screening smokes and very accurate effect ammunition.
